We have clients who reach out to us for SEO help all the time and most have no idea what it even stands for.
If you’re not familiar, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. In simple terms, it means the process of improving your site to increase its visibility when people search for products or services related to your business in Google, Bing, and other search engines. The better visibility your pages have in search results, the more likely you are to garner attention and attract prospective and existing customers to your business.
So why do they ask for it if they have no idea what it is?
I think it is because it sounds like a “hack” a special trick to get ranked on Google, that others know about and that they don’t know about. So they want in. They want in on this super secret way to make more money from their customers.
This is how most of our clients think when they come to us.
They think that 3 letter acronyms like SEO or PPC and all the others are some sort of digital marketing cheat code of secret ninja tricks that magically make their product and business a billion dollar company.Â
Digital marketing is not a cheat code.
There are no hacks.
No quick ways to make money online.
At least not consistently.
And anyone that tells you otherwise is a fraud or an outlier.
There might be a few “tricks” or “hacks” that your company is missing out on when it comes to SEO or PPC or Facebook ads but in reality, business growth is the same today as it was 100 years ago, and it will be the same 100 years from now.
It is about desire, clarity, pain, consistency, familiarity, selling, discipline…
Do you know who your customer is?
What wakes them up in the morning?
What do they stress about when they go to bed at night?
Where do they shop for their products online?
What blogs do they read?
What groups do they hang out with?
Have they heard about you?
How often have they seen you online or in person?
What do they think about you?
What would make them give you their email or phone number?
What could you write or record to help them?
Google has millions of computers running millions of algorithms to rank websites. You cannot trick Google into ranking your website or product if it is actually a sucky product. And even if you manage to trick Google, for a minute, you also have to trick your potential customer into clicking BUY NOW!
And if you happen to trick both Google and your customer into buying a crappy product or service, it is impossible to do that consistently enough for it to matter.
Yeah, if you want to build a hobby, that might work. But not a business. Not a brand that you pass down to your kids.
There are no hacks in marketing.
Build good products, make sure your customer knows about it, and sell it to them consistently.
